Thermodynamics

infoWhy this? Thermodynamics combines enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs free energy to assess chemical feasibility and the effect of temperature. Enthalpy cycles also allow us to investigate ionic stability and energy changes that cannot be measured directly.

scheduleWhy now? With bonding, energetics, and equilibrium established, we can move beyond enthalpy alone to evaluate chemical change while retaining the distinction between feasibility and rate. This provides a fuller account of feasibility before related ideas are applied to electrode potentials and cells.
