Theme 2: Introduction to Macroeconomic Policy

infoWhy this? Introduction to Macroeconomic Policy is taught because it develops an understanding of how governments attempt to influence economic performance and improve living standards. Students explore key macroeconomic objectives, including economic growth, low unemployment, low inflation, and balance of payments stability, as well as the policy tools used to achieve them. Introduction to Macroeconomic Policy also encourages students to evaluate the effectiveness of different policies and the trade-offs governments face when managing complex economic challenges.

scheduleWhy now? Introduction to Macroeconomic Policy is taught at the end of Theme 2 because students have already developed an understanding of economic growth, inflation, unemployment, international trade, and the economic cycle. This unit brings these concepts together by examining how governments use fiscal, monetary, supply-side, and exchange rate policies to influence economic performance. Introduction to Macroeconomic Policy provides a foundation for the more detailed analysis and evaluation of economic issues, policy decisions, and competing economic perspectives that students encounter later in the course.
