Poetic Voices: Seamus Heaney
infoWhy this? Heaney’s poetry allows students to examine how poetic voices construct personal perspective, memory, relationships, place and identity. The poems provide opportunities to analyse sound patterning, imagery, grammar, deixis, narrative framing and shifts in viewpoint. Connections across the collection encourage students to explore recurring concerns while recognising differences between individual poetic voices and situations.
scheduleWhy now? This unit draws together Year 1 learning about language, representation, viewpoint, time and place. Students can transfer methods used in prose and non-literary analysis to more compressed poetic texts, deepening their interpretative precision. Studying Heaney at this stage also consolidates the three sections of Paper 1 and provides opportunities for synoptic revision before progression into Year 2.
