Statistics - Geometric and Negative Binomial Distributions

infoWhy this? Geometric and negative binomial distributions model the number of independent trials needed to reach the first success or a specified number of successes, assuming a constant success probability. They broaden our ability to model waiting times and repeated attempts, while highlighting how the question being asked determines the choice of distribution.

scheduleWhy now? These build on Year 12 discrete random variables and the binomial model by changing from a fixed number of trials to a fixed target number of successes. They extend our repertoire before probability generating functions provide a common framework for analysing discrete distributions.
