Mechanics – Elastic collisions in two dimensions

infoWhy this? Two-dimensional collision models combine vector resolution, conservation of momentum, and restitution to predict how interacting objects change speed and direction. They allow us to analyse oblique impacts and changes in kinetic energy, while recognising the simplifying assumptions needed to model physical interactions mathematically.

scheduleWhy now? Year 12 work on one-dimensional collisions and vectors, reinforced by the recent return to momentum, supplies the necessary foundations. We can now extend familiar collision principles by resolving motion along and perpendicular to the line of impact rather than introducing conservation laws and spatial techniques simultaneously.
