infoWhy this? The NEA allows students to carry out their own geographical enquiry, collecting and analysing primary or secondary data to answer a self-selected question. We study it because it develops independent research skills, critical thinking, and the ability to apply theory to practice. This is important for geographers as it mirrors the work of professional researchers and prepares students for higher education or careers that require investigation, decision-making, and evidence-based evaluation.

scheduleWhy now? By the end of Year 12, students have studied key physical and human geography topics: Changing Places, Earth’s Life Support Systems, Global Connections, and Landscape Systems. They have the content knowledge, fieldwork experience, and analytical skills needed to plan and conduct an independent investigation. Starting the NEA in Year 12 and finishing early in Year 13 ensures students apply this learning while it is fresh.
