Families and Households
infoWhy this? Families and Households examines how family life is organised, how it’s changing, and why. You study demographic trends (fertility, birth, death and divorce rates; ageing; migration), family diversity (nuclear, extended, reconstituted, lone-parent, cohabiting, same‑sex; the “beanpole” family), and childhood as a social construct. You analyse power and roles in the home (domestic division of labour, decision‑making, emotional and “triple” shift), domestic abuse, and the impact of social policy on families. The unit allows you to evaluate key perspectives which students learn in the previous unit.
