The Sociology of Education
infoWhy this? In this unit you learn important areas regarding education. For example, Education looks at what schools do, who succeeds and why, and how policy shapes outcomes. You study the functions of education (e.g. Functionalism on social solidarity and meritocracy; Marxism on ideology, the hidden curriculum and the correspondence principle; New Right on marketisation). You examine achievement differences by social class, gender and ethnicity, using inside- and outside‑school explanations such as material and cultural deprivation, cultural capital and habitus, labelling, setting/streaming, pupil subcultures, teacher expectations and institutional racism.
