Unseen Poetry and Poetry Anthology Revision

infoWhy this? Unseen poetry develops students’ independence as critical readers by requiring them to interpret unfamiliar texts without prior knowledge. Students apply their understanding of language, imagery, form and structure to form clear, evidence-based interpretations and comparisons. Revisiting the anthology alongside unseen poetry strengthens comparative thinking and prepares students for Literature Paper 2, Sections B and C.

scheduleWhy now? This unit follows the study of the set anthology and other major literary texts, so students have a broad range of analytical methods and poetic terminology to draw upon. Revisiting the anthology supports retrieval and strengthens long-term memory, while unseen poetry tests whether students can transfer their knowledge to unfamiliar material. Its position towards the end of Year 10 also provides a useful assessment of students’ readiness for Year 11.
