This unit develops pupils’ geometric reasoning through similarity, constructions, plans and elevations, and work with area and volume, helping them visualise and represent shapes accurately in both 2D and 3D. It strengthens precision, spatial awareness and proportional reasoning, while giving pupils the tools to solve more complex measure problems.

Pupils are ready for this unit because they have already studied transformations, coordinate geometry, angles, perimeter and area, which provide the foundations for accurate construction and reasoning with shape and measure. Teaching it here allows pupils to build on those skills through formal constructions and similarity, while preparing them for later work in GCSE geometry and mensuration.

- Similar shapes have the same shape: corresponding angles are equal and corresponding side lengths are in the same ratio.
- The scale factor between two similar shapes is found by dividing a known side length on the image by the corresponding side length on the original shape.
- Missing side lengths in similar shapes can be found by multiplying or dividing corresponding lengths by the linear scale factor.
- Congruent shapes are identical in shape and size, so corresponding sides and corresponding angles are equal.
- SSS construction means a triangle is uniquely constructed from its three side lengths.
- SAS construction means a triangle is uniquely constructed from two side lengths and the included angle between them.
- ASA construction means a triangle is uniquely constructed from two angles and the included side between them.
- A perpendicular bisector of a line segment crosses the segment at its midpoint and at a right angle of 90 degrees.
- An angle bisector divides an angle into two equal angles.
- A perpendicular line meets another line at a right angle of 90 degrees.
- A point can lie on a line segment or outside the line segment, and different compass construction methods are used in each case.
- A plan is the view of a three-dimensional shape from above.
- An elevation is a two-dimensional view of a three-dimensional shape from the front or from the side.
- Plans and elevations show visible faces and edges of a three-dimensional object using accurate lengths and positions.
- For similar shapes with linear scale factor `k`, the area scale factor is `k^2`.
- For similar solids with linear scale factor `k`, the volume scale factor is `k^3`.
- Missing areas in similar shapes are found by multiplying or dividing by the area scale factor, not the linear scale factor.
- Missing volumes in similar solids are found by multiplying or dividing by the volume scale factor, not the linear scale factor.
- Area units are squared units, so `1 m^2 = 10,000 cm^2` because `1 m = 100 cm`.
- Volume units are cubed units, so `1 m^3 = 1,000,000 cm^3` because `1 m = 100 cm`.

- Calculate a linear scale factor by matching corresponding sides and dividing the new length by the original length.
- Find a missing side length in similar shapes by applying the correct linear scale factor to the corresponding side.
- Construct an SSS triangle accurately using a ruler and compasses to draw arcs from the ends of a measured base.
- Construct an SAS triangle accurately by drawing one side, measuring the included angle with a protractor, and marking the second side length.
- Construct an ASA triangle accurately by drawing the included side and using a protractor to draw the two given angles from its endpoints.
- Construct a perpendicular bisector by drawing equal-radius arcs from both endpoints of a line segment and joining the two arc intersections.
- Bisect an angle by drawing equal arcs from the vertex and then equal arcs from those points, before joining the vertex to the arc intersection.

- Find missing areas or volumes in similar shapes by calculating the linear scale factor first, then using `k^2` for area or `k^3` for volume.
