infoWhy this? Interpreting a design brief and specification helps us turn an identified need into purposeful ideas and evaluate whether a product is successful. Working with wood, metal, and core workshop equipment develops practical accuracy, material awareness, and safe manufacturing habits.

scheduleWhy now? As an introductory project, Block Bots establishes the design-process vocabulary, workshop routines, and safety expectations used throughout KS3 Design & Technology. These foundations prepare us to work more independently with a broader range of materials, tools, and manufacturing methods.

  • A design brief is a clear statement outlining the aims, target user, and constraints of a design project.
  • A specification is a detailed list of criteria that a product must meet, based on the design brief.
  • Health and safety rules in the workshop include wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety goggles and aprons, and tying back long hair.
  • The main hazards associated with using a saw include sharp blades and the risk of cutting oneself.
  • The main hazards associated with using a pillar drill include rotating parts, entanglement, and the risk of trapping fingers.
  • The main hazards associated with using a sanding machine include dust inhalation, abrasion, and the risk of catching loose clothing.
  • The hot glue gun operates at high temperatures and can cause burns if not used carefully.
  • Emergency procedures in the workshop include knowing the location of first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and emergency exits.

  • Interpret a design brief and specification to generate a range of appropriate design ideas.
  • Apply workshop health and safety rules consistently, including correct use of PPE and safe behaviour.
  • Set up and use a saw safely to cut materials, following all relevant safety procedures.
  • Set up and use a pillar drill safely, including securing materials and using guards where appropriate.
  • Set up and use a sanding machine safely, including using dust extraction and keeping hands clear of moving parts.
  • Use a hot glue gun safely and effectively to join materials, including correct handling and safe placement when not in use.
