infoWhy this? Jewellery design introduces the classification and properties of metals while demonstrating how a brief, specification, and user needs guide an aesthetically purposeful product. Designing a mould, understanding pewter casting, and finishing a casting develop knowledge of forming, precision manufacture, surface quality, and safe metalworking.

Earlier projects establish workshop safety, design development, and experience of shaping other material groups; these skills can now be transferred to metals and the specialist demands of casting. Existing CAD knowledge is extended through the production of precise digital drawings for mould manufacture.

  • Metals may be pure metals or alloys; ferrous metals and alloys are iron-based, while non-ferrous metals and alloys are not iron-based.
  • A design brief is a clear statement outlining the aims, target user, and constraints of a design project.
  • A design specification is a detailed list of criteria that a product must meet, including function, aesthetics, materials, size, safety, and cost.
  • Computer aided design software, such as TechSoft 2D Design, can be used to create precise digital drawings for manufacturing moulds.
  • Pewter is a soft metal alloy commonly used in jewellery making due to its low melting point and ease of casting.
  • Pewter-casting moulds may be made from casting-grade MDF or heat-resistant silicone only when the specific material is approved for use with molten pewter.
  • A pewter-casting mould needs a cavity shaped like the intended casting, a sprue through which molten pewter enters, and vents where necessary to let air escape; it must prevent leakage and avoid shapes or undercuts that trap the solid casting.
  • The pewter-casting sequence is to prepare and secure a dry mould, melt the pewter, pour it through the sprue, allow it to solidify and cool, remove the casting, cut off excess material, and finish the surface.

  • Generate and present four distinct and creative design ideas for a piece of jewellery, using annotated sketches or digital drawings.
  • Use 2D design software to create an accurate digital drawing suitable for manufacturing a mould for pewter casting.
  • Assemble and finish a pewter mould by accurately glueing components in place to ensure a secure and functional mould.
  • Safely sand, polish, and drill a pewter casting to achieve a smooth, attractive, and usable piece of jewellery.
  • Design and assemble a blister package that securely holds and displays the finished jewellery, including creating an appropriate backing card design.
