infoWhy this? Designing a lamp brings together user research, product analysis, CAD, laser cutting, electronics, soldering, and packaging to create a functional product for a defined market. Producing and testing mechanically secure and electrically conductive soldered joints develops important understanding of electronic manufacture, fault correction, and quality control.

scheduleWhy now? Previous units have introduced CAD, laser-cut components, target markets, and a simple LED torch circuit. We now combine and deepen this knowledge by progressing from circuit assembly to accurate soldering and integrating the completed circuit into a bespoke, digitally manufactured lamp.

  • Transfer a final lamp design into CAD software, using correct tools such as line, shape, extrude, and fillet.
  • Connect the LED and current-limiting resistor in series across the 9 V direct current battery supply, with the anode towards the positive terminal and the cathode towards the negative terminal.
  • Apply soldering safety procedures by wearing safety goggles, using local extraction, returning the soldering iron to its stand, avoiding contact with hot parts, disconnecting the circuit before adjusting components, and washing hands after soldering.
  • Prepare and secure the components, tin the soldering iron tip if required, heat the joint, feed solder to the joint, remove the solder, remove the iron, and allow the joint to cool.
