A Moment in History
infoWhy this? This unit uses a range of historical stories to develop pupils’ reading skills while broadening their understanding of the past. Texts set in different periods expose pupils to varied voices, cultures and contexts, helping them to build empathy and cultural capital. Through these stories, pupils practise key reading skills (inference, analysis of language and structure, comparison of texts) and encounter rich, topic-specific vocabulary in an engaging, narrative form.
scheduleWhy now? Positioning this unit in Year 7 allows pupils to consolidate core reading skills introduced earlier in KS3 while deepening their understanding of how context shapes characters, events and themes. It supports their wider curriculum learning in subjects such as History and RS, strengthens cross‑curricular links, and helps establish a habit of thinking critically about how the past is represented in texts as they move through KS3.
