Softball
infoWhy this? Softball broadens experience of striking-and-fielding games through batting, pitching, base running, force outs, tag outs, and specialist fielding roles. It develops coordination, tactical judgement, communication, and the ability to select safe, efficient actions as game situations change.
scheduleWhy now? After cricket and rounders in Years 7 and 8, pupils can adapt established striking, catching, throwing, and fielding skills to new equipment, rules, and base-running demands. This provides an appropriate challenge in applying familiar principles with greater independence.
neurologyYou need to know
- Softball is a striking and fielding game in which the batting team tries to score runs and the fielding team tries to stop runs and get batters or runners out.
- The main roles in softball are batter, pitcher, catcher, infielders, outfielders, and base runners.
- A run is scored when a base runner legally touches first base, second base, third base, and home plate in order.
- The batting team changes to fielding after three outs in a half-inning, and a full inning is completed after both teams have batted once.
- A force out happens when a fielder controls the ball and touches the base that a runner is forced to run to before the runner reaches it.
- A tag out happens when a fielder holding the ball touches a runner who is not safely on a base.
- A caught out happens when a fielder catches a batted ball before it touches the ground.
- A batter should stand side-on in a balanced stance, with feet apart, knees slightly bent, and eyes focused on the ball.
- An effective batting swing uses body rotation, a controlled step, level bat path, and follow-through to send the ball accurately into space.
- Hitting the ball into space means directing it away from fielders to make it harder to field and to increase the chance of scoring runs.
- An overarm throw is usually used for longer or faster throws because the arm travels above the shoulder and can generate more power.
- An accurate throw is aimed towards a team-mate’s target area, usually the chest or hands, so the ball can be caught quickly and safely.
- A secure catch is made by watching the ball, moving into line with it, presenting hands early, and cushioning the ball on contact.
- Fielders should move towards the ball quickly, get their body behind it where possible, and control the ball before throwing.
- Infielders usually need quick reactions and short, accurate throws because they are closer to the batter and bases.
- Outfielders usually cover deeper space and return the ball quickly to stop extra bases being scored.
- Good base running depends on speed, awareness of fielders, clear communication, and deciding whether to advance, stop, or return.
- Safe softball play requires players to watch the ball and bat, keep clear of the swing area, drop the bat safely, and avoid obstructing runners.
rocket_launchYou must be able to
- Apply softball rules during competitive play by recognising runs, force outs, tag outs, catches, and changes of innings correctly.
- Throw overarm with a side-on body position, step towards the target, release above the shoulder, and follow through towards the receiver.
- Catch the ball cleanly by tracking its flight, moving into line, presenting a target with the hands, and cushioning the ball into the body.
- Bat the ball accurately by using a stable stance, watching the ball, swinging with control, and directing the shot into space away from fielders.
- Field a ground ball efficiently by moving quickly into position, getting low, using two hands where possible, and securing the ball before throwing.
- Select the best fielding option by deciding whether to throw to a base, return to the pitcher, or hold the ball to limit runs or create an out.
- Run bases effectively by accelerating between bases, touching each base legally, watching the fielders, and deciding when to advance, stop, or return.
- Communicate with team-mates using clear calls, such as calling for the ball or directing runners, to reduce confusion and avoid unnecessary outs.
- Perform in a modified or full softball game by combining batting, fielding, throwing, catching, and base-running skills consistently under pressure.
