infoWhy this? Training methods help pupils understand how structured exercise develops cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, speed, and general health. Safe use of equipment, fitness testing, pulse monitoring, circuit design, and goal setting encourage informed, independent participation in physical activity.

scheduleWhy now? After a year of varied physical activity, pupils have enough practical experience to connect different sporting demands with components of fitness and suitable training. Introducing testing, FITT, and basic programme design now supports greater ownership of fitness across Year 8 and prepares for more targeted planning later.

  • In a gym or fitness suite, key safety rules are to wear appropriate footwear and clothing, check equipment before use, follow instructions on each machine, lift only manageable weights, and keep the area tidy and free from obstacles.
  • Safe technique on resistance machines involves adjusting the seat and pads to fit your body, maintaining a neutral spine with the core braced, using a smooth controlled movement, and avoiding locking or hyperextending joints at the end of the action.
  • Safe technique on cardiovascular machines such as treadmills, bikes, and cross-trainers involves holding the correct hand positions, starting at a low speed or resistance, building up gradually, and stopping the machine completely before stepping off.
  • Bodyweight exercises use the weight of your own body as resistance, and common examples include squats, lunges, press-ups, sit-ups or curl-ups, planks, burpees, and mountain climbers.
  • The main upper-body muscle groups used in resistance and bodyweight exercises are the pectorals in the chest, the latissimus dorsi in the back, the deltoids in the shoulders, the biceps and triceps in the upper arm, and the trapezius in the upper back and neck.
  • The main lower-body muscle groups used in resistance and bodyweight exercises are the quadriceps at the front of the thigh, the hamstrings at the back of the thigh, the gluteals in the buttocks, and the gastrocnemius and soleus in the calf.
  • The abdominals and other core muscles around the trunk stabilise the spine and pelvis during most resistance and bodyweight exercises and should stay engaged to protect the back.
  • Cardiovascular endurance (aerobic fitness) is the ability of the heart, lungs, and blood vessels to supply oxygen to the working muscles for a long period of continuous exercise.
  • Cardiovascular endurance can be improved through regular, appropriately intense activities such as brisk walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, or using cardio machines, with the duration and difficulty increased gradually; shorter bouts of activity can also contribute to improvement.
  • Fitness testing is important because it helps identify strengths and weaknesses, set realistic goals, monitor progress over time, and compare performance to health or sport-related standards.
  • Each fitness test is designed to measure a specific component of fitness, for example the multistage fitness test (bleep test) measures cardiovascular endurance, the sit-and-reach test measures flexibility, and a 30 metre sprint test measures speed.
  • Handgrip dynamometer tests mainly measure muscular strength, while timed sit-up or press-up tests mainly measure muscular endurance.
  • Reliability of a fitness test means it produces consistent results when repeated in the same conditions, and validity means it actually measures the component of fitness it is supposed to measure.
  • Pulse rate, or heart rate, is the number of times the heart beats in one minute, and the preferred site for measuring it manually is the radial pulse at the wrist; if the carotid pulse in the neck is used, gentle pressure must be applied on one side only, and both sides of the neck must never be pressed at the same time.
  • During exercise, pulse rate increases because the heart must pump more blood to deliver extra oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from the working muscles.
  • A structured bodyweight circuit involves performing a set sequence of exercises targeting different muscle groups, for a set time or number of repetitions, with limited rest between stations to maintain intensity.
  • Adapting workouts for different fitness goals involves changing variables such as exercise selection, resistance, number of repetitions and sets, work-to-rest ratio, and overall duration to focus on endurance, strength, power, or general health.

  • Use cardiovascular and resistance machines safely by reading or listening to instructions, adjusting the settings to your body size, starting with low intensity, and stopping the machine fully before getting on or off.
  • Perform basic bodyweight exercises such as squats, lunges, press-ups, sit-ups, and planks with correct alignment, controlled speed, and a full, safe range of movement.
  • Construct and complete a simple bodyweight circuit of 6–8 exercises that alternates upper-body, lower-body, and core movements, maintains steady effort, and follows agreed work and rest times.
  • Measure pulse rate manually, preferably at the radial pulse at the wrist, by locating the pulse, counting beats for a set time, converting this to beats per minute, and recording the value clearly; if using the carotid pulse in the neck, apply gentle pressure on one side only, and never press both sides of the neck at the same time.
  • Measure pulse rate manually before exercise and immediately after stopping, and use a heart rate monitor to measure it during exercise; describe or plot how pulse rate changes across these stages to show the body's response and recovery.
  • Carry out standard fitness tests (for example the multistage fitness test, sit-and-reach test, grip strength test, or 30 metre sprint) by following the correct protocol and recording results accurately with correct units.
  • Interpret fitness test results by comparing them with previous scores or normative data, identifying strengths and weaknesses, and suggesting at least one realistic way to improve a weaker area.
  • Plan a basic cardiovascular endurance session using the FITT principles, selecting a suitable activity, deciding appropriate intensity and duration, and explaining how it will overload the cardiovascular system safely.
  • Match resistance and bodyweight exercises to the main muscle groups they work and modify exercise choice, body position, or leverage to target a chosen muscle group more specifically.
