Basketball

infoWhy this? Year 9 basketball integrates controlled dribbling, evasion, passing, lay-ups, set shooting, and defensive organisation in competitive play. Applying player-to-player and 2–3 zone systems develops rapid decision-making, spatial awareness, communication, and collective problem-solving.

scheduleWhy now? Previous basketball units established core techniques, triple threat, lay-up footwork, and introductory defensive systems. Pupils can now perform these consistently under pressure, switch between defensive approaches, and manage space and transitions with greater independence.

neurologyYou need to know

  • The triple threat position in basketball is a stance where the player can shoot, pass, or dribble, with feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, trunk leaning slightly forward, and the ball protected close to the body.
  • In a correct dribbling stance, a player has feet shoulder-width apart on the balls of the feet, knees slightly bent, trunk bent forward at the waist, and the head up to see the court.
  • When dribbling, the ball should be pushed downwards using the fingertips, with the shoulder and elbow extending and the wrist flexing to control the ball.
  • When dribbling correctly, the ball is kept at about waist height, slightly in front of the body (no more than about 1 metre), with the hand on top or slightly behind the ball to maintain control.
  • A double dribble violation occurs when a player dribbles the ball with both hands at the same time, or dribbles, then holds the ball with one or both hands, and then starts dribbling again.
  • A travelling violation occurs when a player holding the ball moves one or both feet illegally, such as taking too many steps without dribbling or lifting and re-placing the pivot foot.
  • Effective evasion of a defender when dribbling involves using both hands to dribble, changing speed and direction, and creating space while maintaining legal footwork.
  • A lay-up is a close-range shot where a player drives towards the basket, jumps off one foot, and releases the ball softly off the backboard towards the basket.
  • For a right-handed lay-up, the final take-off foot should be the left foot, with the ball held on the right-hand side of the body, and the shooting hand guiding the ball.
  • During a lay-up, the ball is brought up between the shoulder and ear, the shooting-side knee is driven upwards while the opposite take-off leg extends, and the ball is released from a high point towards the basket.
  • A correct follow-through on a lay-up ends with the shooting arm extended, the wrist relaxed, and the fingers directed towards the target, and is held until the ball reaches the basket.
  • A set shot in basketball is a two-handed or one-handed shot taken from a stationary position using the BEEF technique: Balance, Elbow, Eyes, and Follow-through.
  • In the BEEF shooting technique, Balance means feet shoulder-width apart with the shooting-side foot slightly in front, knees bent, hips square to the target, and back straight.
  • In the BEEF shooting technique, Elbow means keeping the shooting elbow tucked in under the ball to line the shooting arm up with the basket.
  • In the BEEF shooting technique, Eyes means focusing on a specific target point on the hoop or backboard throughout the shot.
  • In the BEEF shooting technique, Follow-through means flicking the wrist so the ball rolls off the fingers with backspin and holding the shooting arm extended towards the target.
  • In a correct defensive stance for man-to-man defence, a player has feet shoulder-width apart on the balls of the feet, knees bent, trunk low, hands active in front, and head up scanning both their player and the ball.
  • In man-to-man defence on the ball, the defender positions themselves between their opponent and the basket at a distance that allows them to react to drives and shots.
  • In man-to-man defence off the ball, the defender stays between their player and the basket and close enough to make receiving a pass difficult.
  • In a standard 2–3 zone defence, two guards play at the top of the zone while three players (two forwards and a centre) form a line or triangle closer to the basket to protect the key area and rebound effectively.

rocket_launchYou must be able to

  • Adopt a triple threat position as soon as the ball is received, showing clearly that you are able to shoot, pass, or dribble while protecting the ball from a defender.
  • Dribble the basketball with either hand while keeping the ball at waist height, using fingertips rather than the palm, maintaining a low stance and keeping your head up.
  • Change hand while dribbling without committing a double dribble, using controlled crossovers or switches that keep one continuous dribble and legal footwork.
  • Drive past a defender using dribbling with both hands, changes of speed and direction, and legal footwork to create space without committing travelling or double dribble violations.
  • Perform a lay-up from the dominant-hand side by dribbling towards the basket, taking off from the opposite foot while driving the shooting-side knee upwards and extending the take-off leg, lifting the ball to the shoulder–ear area, and releasing it softly off the backboard with the shooting arm extended, the wrist relaxed, and the fingers directed towards the target.
  • Execute a stationary set shot using the BEEF technique, demonstrating correct stance, elbow alignment, visual focus on the target, and a controlled wrist flick with held follow-through.
  • Adopt and maintain an effective man-to-man defensive stance, moving laterally to stay between your opponent and the basket while keeping hands active to contest dribbles, passes, and shots.
  • Apply correct on-ball and off-ball positioning in man-to-man defence during small-sided games, adjusting distance and angle as the ball and your opponent move.
  • Set up a basic 2–3 zone defence with two guards and three back-line players in correct positions, and shift collectively as the ball moves to pressure the ball, protect the key, and secure rebounds.
