Starting Strong: Independence, Communication and Future Readiness
infoWhy this? This half term supports students’ transition into Key Stage 5 by establishing the practical, interpersonal and organisational skills needed to succeed as increasingly independent learners. Students are introduced to the Wellbeing Inspire curriculum and Unifrog so that they understand the support available for their personal development and future pathways. Sessions on organisation and communication etiquette help students manage competing demands, meet deadlines and communicate appropriately with staff and other adults. The presentation task develops confidence, public-speaking skills and the ability to communicate ideas clearly to a wider audience. Introducing work experience also encourages students to begin considering their strengths, interests and employability skills, while understanding the expectations of a professional environment.
scheduleWhy now? At the beginning of Key Stage 5, students face greater academic independence, increased workload and new expectations around personal responsibility. Establishing effective systems for managing tasks, calendars and deadlines early will help them develop productive habits before workload intensifies. Clear guidance on communication is timely as students begin interacting with staff, employers and external organisations more independently. Early use of Unifrog allows students to build their profiles and engage meaningfully with post-18 options throughout the year rather than leaving decisions until application deadlines approach. Introducing work experience at this stage gives students sufficient time to explore suitable placements, make professional contact with employers and prepare for the summer experience. The presentation activity provides an early opportunity to build confidence and establish students’ voices within the year group.
